A Japanese suicide plane bombed the hospital ship USS Comfort off Leyte Island. Allied losses, primarily American, were 90,000 men and 300 fighting vehicles, but those losses could be replaced much more easily than the Germans could replace theirs. The Westfield ad shown below was printed in the November 1941 issue of the 'American Bicyclist'. The fuse significantly simplified and enhanced the lethality of air bursts and eliminated the need for complicated and unreliable time fuses.
