I found several anthologies whose parameters restricted submissions to women, but only one for men. Unlike many of her fel- low poets, she started her career in the fanzines and small press markets. Also, many African Americans desire for their children to have particular phenotypes more typically found among people predominately of African ancestry (more specifically, Western and West-Central African)-full lips, wide nose, brown or dark skin, and curly, kinky hair–contrary to popular belief, you do have many African Americans who do desire to have their children to look “Black”.

The prejudice is clear, but there is also a practical problem here. Line-length is variable, not prescribed, in free verse; therefore, the poet can break a line according to the sound and emphasis needed. As she makes clear in her novel, Victor creates life, but he cannot nurture it. While conflicts between external and internal identity are briefly touched on in Andreyeva 's story, her main concern is with the secret that has been excised from her mem- ory: Andreyeva is sexually attracted to women, which is a harshly punished crime for the women of her world.

While these battles are still being fought, the questioning of the Enlightenment hierarchies of being focused on race was accompanied by a questioning of male superiority and heterosexist socialization. Somehow, making the character aware that she was being objectified was supposed to lessen the exploitation. Later works in the series, which can be termed a "dynastic space opera," are set (in terms of internal chronology) parallel to, before, and after the events described in the first book.
