It is home to rare and endangered species of flora and fauna. The elephant baby follows its mother and so learns about its probable future role. They would then have spread southwards across the land bridge of central America, eventually reaching South America. The glands excrete the salt found in the water like a filtering system. This might partially explain why Central African rainforests have higher biomass than West African ones, and why Africa has higher biomass than Amazonia, where the megafauna went extinct around 10 000 years ago.
