This is a classic topological puzzle that has been around for at least 250 years. The modern theory of dynamical systems depends heavily on differential geometry and topology as, illustrated, for example, in the extensive background section included in Abraham and Marsden's Foundations of Mechanics. I will also explain the implications of this result on the general form of the conformal group of a compact Lorentzian manifold. The notion of a directional derivative of a function from multivariable calculus is extended in Riemannian geometry to the notion of a covariant derivative of a tensor.

These techniques are used regularly by Riemannian Geometers. Various aspects of the use of quadratic forms in algebra, analysis, topology, geometry, and number theory are addressed. Modern geometry is the title of a popular textbook by Dubrovin, Novikov, and Fomenko first published in 1979 (in Russian). Coincidentally with these explorations, mapmakers recovered Ptolemy’s Geography, in which he had recorded by latitude (sometimes near enough) and longitude (usually far off) the principal places known to him and indicated how they could be projected onto a map.

Geometry now is, in large part, the study of structures on manifolds that have a geometric meaning, in the sense of the principle of covariance that lies at the root of general relativity theory in theoretical physics. On the other hand, Professor Wei has constructed higher dimensional spaces with positive Ricci curvature and many holes, just not infinitely many holes. Sun-Ichi Amari, who is the leader of a large and impressive Japanese school of information-geometers, has a nice result (in, e.g., his "Hierarchy of Probability Distributions" paper) showing that maximum entropy distributions are, exactly, the ones with minimal interaction between their variables --- the ones which approach most closely to independence.

A student's appreciation of the more general case will undoubtedly be enhanced by an earlier acquaintance with differential geometry of three dimensions The more elementary parts of the subject are discussed in Chapters I-XI.
